Celestial Window Observatory Construction
Want to build your own observatory? Feel free to use these pictures and plans for ideas. Observatories are great for quick and convenient observing sessions. The chance to skip setup, collimation, alignment, and takedown saves a lot of time that can be better used for observing (or sleeping)! One drawback is that the walls limit your view close to the horizon. A design like this that opens to the ground on the south-facing side will allow you to see any star in the sky visible from your latitude at some time of the year or other in spite of the walls (applies to North America).
A few details:
16'x26', includes a 6'x16' control room and 16'x 20' scope room
Roof powered by Aleko AR5750 rack and pinion gate motor
Climate controlled in both rooms for temperature, humidity, and mold control
Walls ventilated for quick cooldown and less turbulence seen through scopes as a result of heat rising off walls
Sliding roof locking mechanism to help prevent roof blowing off in high winds whether open or closed.
