God's word on God's world
The universe is so large that we could never fully comprehend its size. If we were to fly to the nearest star, Proxima Centauri, traveling at approximately 25,000 miles per hour which is the highest speed that man has ever traveled in a spaceship, it would take about 115,000 years to get there! There are other stars in our own galaxy that are about 15,000 times farther away yet than even Proxima Centauri. However, our galaxy is only one of billions scattered through the universe. Now for an amazing fact, the universe is getting even larger. How do we know this? Is it only because Science tells us? No, It’s because God through His Word reveals it us, although modern science does testify to this fact now too. The Bible mentions the expansion of the universe more than a dozen times. Isaiah 40:22 says; It is he… that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in. Astronomers have discovered this through natural means less than one hundred years ago.
Men also assumed that the stars could easily be numbered. Ptolemy counted 1,056 stars. Tycho Brahe cataloged 777, Johannes Kepler counted 1005 stars. But the Bible plainly states that the stars are innumerable in Jeremiah 33:22. Today astronomers have not even been able to successfully count the number of galaxies and each one of these hold millions and billions of stars.
The scriptures say that the earth is round; “It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth” Isaiah 40:22. Men of ancient times, and even long after Isaiah wrote this, believed the earth was flat. They also assumed the earth was supported by some physical means such as a giant human named Atlas or by enormous mythological creatures. But believers in God have for thousands of years known that this was false. Job 26:7 says; He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.
The Bible also says that the universe is running down, This was confirmed in the discovery of the Second Law of Thermodynamics which states that all systems in the universe when left on their own tend to become disordered, dispersed and corrupted, decaying into a form of disintegrated chaotic nature. This discovery was not made by man until 2,500 years after it was initially revealed in the Bible in Isaiah 51:6; Psalms 102:26; and Romans 8:20-21. This Law also shows that the evolutionary theory is completely at odds with the laws of physics.
The point is that God’s word is accurate and can be trusted regardless of what it is speaking about. The Bible has been right all along and human discoveries are slowly catching up to the many exciting truths revealed in God’s word. Contrary to what some say, the Bible and science are compatible with each other. God is the author of science and has created everything, including all the laws of physics, so we can expect to see the beautiful harmony of all of creation aligned perfectly with Word of God.
